Children’s department (paediatrics)

If your child needs to be admitted in Sint-Trudo Hospital, this will be at our renewed paediatrics ward. The ward has 23 beds, divided among isolation rooms, single and double rooms, a room for ambulatory care and a beautiful spacious playroom. A team of specialized paediatricians and nurses is available 24 hours a day to provide your child with the best possible care.

What can we help you with?

The children's ward is cheerfully decorated so that children forget as much as possible that they are in a hospital (rooms and corridors with warm colors, drawings, a large play area ...). Through a number of child-friendly initiatives, we try to reassure our young patients as much as possible and make their stay in the hospital as pleasant as possible.

As a parent, you may always visit your child and can stay overnight in your child's room and eat with them. In consultation with the nurse you can help take care of your child (e.g. washing, dressing, taking their temperature, giving them food and medication, aerosol, etc.).

With hand puppet Sam to the operating room

An operation is often a major event for a child. It is therefore important to tell children as clearly as possible what is going to happen. This reduces fear of the unknown and usually calms them down. To reassure the ambulatory patients before their operation, the nurse, together with hand puppet Sam, explains the route from the children's ward to the operating room with photos and pictures in a book. Depending on the operation, the children also receive a sticker sheet with the most important "stops" during the route and they may choose fun stickers themselves. They may place these on the sticker sheet as they complete the route. After the operation, they also receive a "good diploma" from the nurse.

To an examination? By car!

Patients who have to go to our radiology department or to our nuclear medicine department for an examination, can drive to the examination in a real VW minivan. In this way we try to make the visit to the doctor a bit more fun. The van has a remote control that the nurse can use to drive it, but children can also drive it themselves by pushing the gas pedal. For the little ones, the hospital purchased a cute little pushcart.

Examination with distraction

The examination room in the children's ward is completely customized for our smallest patients, with an ergonomic examination table. To distract the children, they can watch their favorite show on a TV attached to the ceiling and after an injection they are comforted with a gift from the gumball vending machine.

The paediatrics ward uses nitrous oxide and even virtual reality glasses if this can reassure the child to make the examination more peaceful.

Playroom

The children's ward has a nice, spacious playroom where children can play, draw, do crafts, read or watch TV with the supervisor. In the afternoon they can also go there under adult supervision. In the playroom you will also find puzzles, board games and craft materials. The playroom closes at 8 p.m.

If your child needs to stay in bed or in their room, you can ask toys to use in the room.

In the children's ward there is also a children's library, a DVD player, a PlayStation, a digital TV and some laptops. If your child would like to use these, please ask a nurse on the ward.

Every week (except during summer holiday) the Mediclowns visit our ward. The scheduled visits are announced via the information board on the ward.
